Sure, the PinBox’s robustness and accuracy depends almost entirely on the builder, and it’s so light that even a breath can cause some shake, but still, it’s a great piece of kit. In about an hour, for $20 or $30, plus a few dollars for some glue, you can go from some pieces of heavyweight paper and some 3d printed knobs to a functional pinhole camera, with all the necessary parts and functionality of every other camera, of virtually any type, from Ibn al-Haytham’s book of Optics a millennia ago, through Niépce, Daguerre, and Fox-Talbot, right on through to your iPhone and whatever new cameras just came out at PhotoKina or whatever. It’s virtually impossible to slide the paper shutter back and forth over the pinhole without introducing some amount of camera shake.īut if you have a stable surface and hold the camera down firmly while you slide the shutter open and closed, well, it’s pretty sharp, as you’d expect an acid etched pinhole to be, and given the fun I had putting it together, it was well worth the $20 I paid for one.Īs a learning tool, the PinBox is brilliant, and very useful and fun for young and old alike.The lighter the camera, the harder it is to handhold for any length of time, and 2 seconds is way too long to try to handhold, unless you’re after a Jon Wilkening-type result.I employed the excellent Pinhole Assist app to set my exposure times, and it went fine. And I really need to clean the windows, again.īut other than that, the PinBox makes a competent camera! I hated Delta 100 in D76, but it looks good in highly dilute HC. You will need 120 film - available HERE at The FPP.By the way, I developed this in Ilfotec HC 1:47 for 7.5 minutes, and I love the results. The PinBox is fun to use and makes amazing images! To expose you 120 film, recommend a light meter app for your phone or you can use the FPP Black Cat Exposure Meter. Robert recommended a cheap clamping style cell phone holder to help attach it to surfaces or tripod. It needs to be stable and still while exposing. Using this camera is like using any pinhole camera, the exposures will be longer than traditional cameras. Leslie "glammed up" her camera and covered it with a stary night print paper, then embellished it when it was finished (pictured below).įinished it’s the size of a smaller compact camera, solid and strong as the 120 spools help with the structural integrity! Leslie Lazenby of the Film Photography Podcast assembled her camera and she reported it took a little longer to assemble. It is estimated to take 45 - 60 minutes to assemble.
The assembly is not difficult but we fully recommend watching his assembly video first (above). In the video, Robert Hamm states the reason he uses certain types and the fact that not all are needed but why each item work best for that particular step. What you will need are various types of glue and adhesives and a roll of film. Also is the instruction sheet with basics and online links for instructional videos. What you will find in the envelope is the kraft board pre-cut and scored pieces, spool keys, winding keys, 120 spool and of course a precision pinhole mounted on a disk for easy handling.
